Petra tickets & opening times

  • Jordan Pass - the best deal if you're staying 3+ nights in the country. Includes a multi-day Petra ticket and waives the visa fee.
  • 1-day adult ticket: 50 JOD · 2-day: 55 JOD · 3-day: 60 JOD.
  • Open daily 6:00-18:00 in summer, 6:00-16:00 in winter.
  • Petra by Night runs Mon, Wed and Thu evenings (20:30-22:30). Separate 17 JOD ticket.

The Petra hikes worth doing

The Treasury via the Siq

The classic - 1.2 km walk through the canyon. Best at 7 am for warm light and no crowds.

The Monastery (Ad-Deir)

850 steps up. 2-3 hours round trip. Quieter than the Treasury, arguably more impressive.

Al-Khubtha trail

The view of the Treasury from above. Steep but spectacular - go for sunrise.

High Place of Sacrifice

An hour up, panoramic view over the whole Petra basin. Bring water.

Getting around Jordan

Local buses are the cheapest way to move but rarely run on a fixed schedule - they leave when full. JETT is comfortable and bookable online. Taxi prices below are typical ranges; agree the fare before you get in.

Amman ↔ Petra

  • Local bus7 JOD

    Leaves Amman's southern bus station and Petra's local bus station (4-min walk from the hostel). Runs ~6:00-11:00 daily, Fridays 6:00-7:00. No timetable - buses leave when full.

  • JETT bus10 JOD

    Departs Amman 6:00, returns from Petra at 16:00. Book online.

    Amman's southern bus station to Tafleh local bus station, ~6:00-11:00 daily (Fridays 6:00-7:00). From Tafleh, hire a local minibus/taxi onward to Dana.

Amman ↔ Dead Sea

    One tour daily - leaves Amman Abdali at 8:30, returns from the Dead Sea resorts area at 17:30.
