Travel guide
Most travellers reach Petra from one of three hubs - Amman, Aqaba or Wadi Rum. Here is what to expect on each leg of the trip.
The classic backpacker route. The 100 km drive from Wadi Musa to the Wadi Rum visitor centre takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours along the Desert Highway. A shared seat is 20 JD per person. Bring a scarf - it gets dusty once you cross into the protected area.
See Wadi Rum toursThe fastest way back to the capital. Amman city is around 3 to 3.5 hours from Petra at 30 JD per seat; Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) is slightly closer at 40 JD per seat. Departures are timed so you can comfortably catch evening flights.
Heading south for the beach or the ferry to Egypt? Petra to Aqaba is about 2 hours and just 15 JD per shared seat - the cheapest way to get to the Red Sea coast without a rental car.
Combine Petra with a float in the Dead Sea or a stop in mosaic-rich Madaba on the way to Amman. Ask at reception for the next planned departure - we add seasonal routes whenever there is demand.
