The Best Time to Visit Petra: A Month-by-Month Guide for 2026
When to visit Petra for good weather, low crowds and fair prices. A month-by-month guide to temperatures, festivals and what to pack, written from Wadi Musa.
Petra sits at around 900 m above sea level in southern Jordan, so the weather is more mountain than desert. Summer days can hit 36 °C in the canyons, winter mornings drop below freezing, and shoulder seasons are close to perfect. The short answer: the best time to visit Petra is March-May and September-November.
Spring (March - May) , the sweet spot
Daytime 18-28 °C, wildflowers along the Royal Tombs trail, and long enough days to hike the back trail to the Monastery in comfort. Easter and the early May bank holidays are busy , book your hostel 4-6 weeks ahead.
Summer (June - August) , hot but quiet
Wadi Musa sees 30-36 °C in the day, but the rock walls of the Siq keep the early-morning walk surprisingly cool. Start at 06:00, be back in the pool by 13:00. Hotel prices are 20-30 % cheaper than in spring.
Autumn (September - November) , our favourite
Stable, dry weather, 20-28 °C, deep golden light on the Treasury, and the September Petra Marathon brings a fun atmosphere to town. This is when most photographers come.
Winter (December - February) , moody and empty
Cold mornings (0-10 °C), occasional rain or even snow on the high cliffs, but the site is almost empty and prices drop further. Bring a warm layer for Petra by Night , the desert gets sharp after sunset.
Avoid (if you can)
Ramadan dates shift each year and many small restaurants in Wadi Musa close during daylight hours. The site itself stays open, but the town feels quieter , check the current Ramadan calendar before booking.
