What to Pack for Jordan: A Complete Backpacker Packing List

What to pack for Jordan, season by season , clothes, shoes, gadgets, medicines and the small things travellers always forget. Written for backpackers.

Jordan is small but climatically wild , you can swim in the Dead Sea, climb to the Monastery and sleep under stars in Wadi Rum on the same trip. This is the packing list we recommend to backpackers heading to Petra.

Clothes

  • Loose linen trousers or hiking pants (cover knees in town)
  • 2-3 t-shirts that cover shoulders
  • 1 long-sleeve shirt for sun + mosque entry
  • 1 lightweight fleece (Petra and Wadi Rum are cold after sunset)
  • Swimwear (Dead Sea, Aqaba, our pool)
  • Light scarf (sun, dust, mosques)
  • Hat with a brim

Shoes

Trail runners or sturdy trainers , Petra is 8-15 km of uneven stone in a day. Flip-flops or sport sandals for camp and pool. Hiking boots are overkill unless you're doing Dana or the Jordan Trail.

Tech

  • Reusable 1 L water bottle , every Rafiki floor has free refill stations
  • Universal travel adapter (Jordan uses Type C, F, G, J)
  • Power bank , you'll be off-grid in Wadi Rum
  • Headlamp for the camp

Small things people forget

  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Electrolyte tablets
  • Tissues / wet wipes for the long bus rides
  • Printout of your Jordan Pass QR code
  • A few US dollars or euros to change at the airport for the first taxi
